In order to increase your tolerance to CO2 you need to breathe through your nose during exercise. Is this true for all exercises? I do a few HIIT sessions and I’m not sure how I could breathe fully/quickly enough through the nose during the cardio segments. Is it something that comes with practice or do I need to work less intensely?

Two books will guide your understanding and effective practice of nose breathing for health and exercise. 1. 'Breath - the new science of a lost art’ by James Nestor (2020) 2. ’The Oxygen Advantage' by Patrick McKeown (2015) includes guidelines for a three-week nose breathing program that reduces over-breathing and attains a higher BOLT score. On page 233: When your BOLT score is less than 20 seconds your breathing volume will be greater than what your body requires, resulting in a risk of over-breathing during physical exercise. All breathing should be through the nose when performing physical exercise so as not to increase breathing volume even further. When your BOLT score is greater than 20 seconds it is fine for you to breathe through the mouth during exercise for brief periods of time. Only when your BOLT score is greater than 30 seconds can intense physical exercise be performed without risk of over-breathing. The goal for serious athletes is to attain a BOLT score of 40 seconds.
