Description
Chairs and shoes are destroying our ability to squat. Did you know that your ability to get up and down from the floor may determine your life expectancy? While we can’t expect our students to immediately throw away their furniture and positive-heeled footwear, we can help educate them about the importance of being able to squat and the steps they can take to make friends with the floor via the stomach massage. Join Trina Altman for this online Pilates workshop to become proficient in the regressions, modifications and other preparatory corrective exercises that will help your students to not only embody the stomach massage, but also to enjoy it. Get inspired while learning how this exercise can express itself in a multitude of playful incarnations and orientations in space. Expect to leave with tools for your group reformer classes that will allow your students to reclaim the right to remain upright while having their feet on the foot bar!
Objectives
- Gain a deeper understanding of the component parts of the Stomach Massage exercise
- Observe Trina teach how deconstruction patterns can become a framework for embodied knowledge
- Learn sensory feedback methods that facilitate awareness of the feet and ankles
- Help your students advance safely in a group reformer class while incorporating creative movement practices and common sense biomechanics
- Learn how to utilize directions of movement, bony landmarks and fascial continuities to boost your creativity every time you teach!
Concepts & Techniques
- Discover open/closed chain squat regressions and progressions to enhance your students' "inner GPS" system.
- Uncover the fascial connections of the plantar fascia, gastrocnemius, soleus, and hamstrings and how these connections illuminate the importance of hip, knee, and ankle mobility in the Stomach Massage
- Address passive vs. active range of motion discrepancies
- Learn how this discrepancy can influence the Stomach Massage as well as postural habits.
- Gain an understanding of deconstruction principles by utilizing decreased levers, closed chain feedback, and changes of orientation to gravity to prepare you for the Stomach Massage.
- Understand the concept of torque and posterior glide as a prerequisite for maintaining integrity of the hip joint in the squat variation of the Stomach Massage.

" One of the best workshops I've taken. The stomach massage is not a favorite to do or teach but I am starting to incorporate it more. I especially liked the ball exercises and appreciated the creativity in designing the sequence and the way she broke everything down at the end. Look forward to more of Trina's workshops! "
