About This Workshop

Discover how diaphragm asymmetry impacts your clients’ movement and breathing patterns in this deep-dive workshop with Donna Parise Byrne and Dr. Sarah Petrich. Learn how imbalances in the diaphragm influence posture, rib alignment, and overall breathing mechanics—and how to address them effectively.

You’ll explore the concept of the Zone of Apposition, the area where the diaphragm and abdominal wall interact, and understand how restoring balance here can enhance airflow, deepen core connection, and improve postural alignment.

Gain practical strategies for working on the reformer, using focused, targeted exercises to prepare the body for more efficient, connected movement. You’ll come away with tools to improve breath, gait mechanics, and both concentric and eccentric abdominal control. The material also enhances proprioception around the ribcage and shoulder girdle—helping restore the diaphragm’s primary role as a respiratory muscle, rather than a default spinal stabilizer.

Concepts & Techniques

  • How to connect and rebalance the Zone of Apposition
  • How the internal obliques support internal rotation of the ribs
  • How to restore the diaphragm's role as muscle of respiration as opposed to a spinal stabilizer.
  • How to activate the hamstrings to stabilize the pelvis so the internal obliques can assist with internal rotation of the ribs.

Objectives

  • Identify the Zone of Apposition and its relationship to posture, breathing and core connection.
  • Explore the Anatomy of the Diaphragm
  • How to achieve internal rotation of the ribs and its importance.
  • Understand breathing mechanics and air flow relative to movement of the diaphragm.

Wonderful workshop that was especially helpful for me personally with my flat back and flared ribs. I have learned the physiological reasons for our ribcage imbalances as well as many great strategies and movements/ecercises to practice myself and teach to my clients to help us breathe and move better. Thank you!

Thank you for the insights presented in the Re- Balancing Breath Course! I found it informative and will work on integrating this approach within my Pilates classes.

Clare D

Thank you for providing a brief introduction as to why we may see asymmetrical alignment and breathing. Especially the beginning session where we sat just slightly rounded forward and blowing a balloon, it brought a whole new awareness to how I breathe and how others might be experiencing their ribcage move as they try to do Pilates exercises.

Great Course!

The content made it easy to picture how to combine Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) concepts with Pilates. I’d like to take a Rebalance Pilates workshop in the future.
